Why does salt make you thirsty?

The body is made up of about 60 per cent water, most of which is contained in your cells, but part of it is being used to carry the blood cells around your body. When you take in a lot of salt it makes its way into this “extra-cellular” water in your body. You are now in a position where the main cells in your body contain low salt water, while the water outside the cells has become much saltier. So, water flows from inside cells to join the sodium in your bloodstream to balance this out. Your cells become drier, you feel dry, and so you get the urge to drink.
